Re-platforming without starting over

We are in the middle of re-platforming a healthcare information product right now. The hardest decisions are not about what to build. They are about what to keep.

There is a temptation, when you take on a re-platform, to treat everything that came before as a problem to be solved. Tear it down, start clean, rebuild. It feels decisive. It is usually wrong.

The work we are doing at the moment, rebuilding a platform in a regulated, detail-heavy field, has been an exercise in restraint as much as construction. Knowing what already works and protecting it. Knowing what is slowing people down and removing it. The goal is not a new thing for its own sake. It is the same job done better, on a foundation that will hold.
